- 1990 Toyota FJ62 Land Cruiser
- VIN: JT3FJ62G5L1116494
- Record setting FJ60/62 when sold
Underneath a thin sheet of storage dust sat a highly original 1990 Toyota Land Cruiser, ready for a new home and a new legacy.
A colleague and friend was the proud 15 year owner of a clean 1990 Toyota FJ62 Land Cruiser. We would see him out with the car out on occasion and always made a point to ask questions about it and plant the seed about potentially buying it someday.
At the end of 2019, the owner sold their business and retired. As we saw less of them, we saw less of the FJ62 as well. However, we ran into the owner at a convenience store late one night and he had finally come around, saying, “I think it’s time to sell the Land Cruiser.”
Our Process
Maximizing value at auction through detailed storytelling and presentation
Acquisition
Several days after our late night encounter, we met to look at the car in detail. It was the real deal, a strikingly original example, hiding under the normal dirt and grime that a 30 year old vehicle would accumulate.
We talked about buying it, but there were no FJ62 comps for something this nice. Given our friendship, we agreed to approach the opportunity as a win/win and Garage 44 would prepare the car for sale on their behalf.
Preparation
We serviced and detailed the vehicle thoroughly, leaving no stone unturned. The documentation and photo gallery process was a focus, since this was one of the finer examples the market had seen at that time, and still to this date.
Our strategy:
- Preserve the originality of the vehicle as much as possible, while replacing practical outdated parts to improve the overall presentation.
- Document every detail: OEM part numbers, factory manuals, hardware, etc.
- Present the finest Toyota Land Cruiser FJ62 listing to date, establish the gold standard for buyers to reference for years to come.
Presentation
The car showed especially well on BaT as a result of our thorough presentation and the result was a record setting sale of $66,500 (without buyer fees) which broke the previous record by over $15,000 or 30%.
This Toyota Land Cruiser FJ62 was our second-ever listing, and remains a favorite because it was a true testament to the market-shifting power of a detailed auction preparation and presentation process.
BaT Listing
This was my second listing, but my first venture doing it for a client, so this is where it all started. This commission coincided with the shutdown in March 2020 so quite frankly, I had nothing better to do as our limousine business ground to a halt. A huge thank you to Doug for believing that I could indeed “get him every dime” for his FJ62. Chris Beal shot much of the photo gallery and deserves a huge thank you for his time and effort.
